Can You Tell These Woodpeckers Apart? A Woodpecker Identification Quiz

Introduction

Yes — with a little practice you can tell woodpeckers apart. This quiz tests whether you notice the small but telling details: bill length, crest shape, where they forage, and the patterns on their backs. I made it to be playful but practical—learn a few quick ID tricks as you go.

About the Quiz

There are eight questions, starting easy (size and color) and getting trickier (behavior and subtle field marks). Expect species commonly seen in North America: Downy, Hairy, Pileated, Northern Flicker, Red-bellied, Red-headed, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, and Acorn Woodpecker.

If you want a deep dive while you wait for your score, I wrote about why woodpeckers don’t get brain damage (Why Don’t Woodpeckers Get Brain Damage?) and the spiritual meaning of their tapping (The Spiritual Meaning of Woodpeckers).
